What options are availible to me for life insurance for my father who has pre existing conditions?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

My dad over the past several years has seen his health go down hill, and until recenly, i have not been able to afford a life insurance policy for him. He has had strokes and heart attacks, so there are some pre existing conditions. Are there any life insurance policies that are affordable, that would cover him? Im just looking for something that would cover funeral cost.

The only option you would likely be able to get is gauranteed issue insurance. There are no medical questions or medical underwriting, however it is expensive and most have some sort of pre-exisiting clause for a certain period of time.

Your best bet is to contact a lisensed insurance broker in your area and they will be able to go over whatever gauranteed issue products they have access to.

Aside from that all you can do is start saving really. Insurance is something that you never use until you need it and when you need it it’s almost impossible to buy if you don’t already have it. If people were able to buy it only when they need it, insurance companies would go out of business.

What LIFE insurance companies have had a bad record in denying legitimate claims?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I am deciding which company to go with for my life insurance purchase. Wanted to make sure my spouse and child wouldn’t be mistreated by the company should anything happened to me.
Thanks!

You check with AM Best, Moody or Weiss Rating, I wouldn’t take a policy with anyone but an A company. I ha vent seen many deny claims but take forever to settle is another story. The rating is used to show financial solvency. The more solvent the more money they have in there coffers to pay out. Hope that helps

Can you direct a beneficiary to spend life insurance proceeds a specific way?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

In the event that someone dies, can their life insurance proceeds be directed a specific way if they leave a note of such wish? If not, what must be done to direct the proceeds of a life insurance settlement so that specific things be done. For example: paying a bill or buying a house for the beneficiary.

The beneficiary of the policy should be a testamentary trust in favor of the person who you want to benefit. The death benefit will go into the trust, which will be administered for the benefit of the beneficiary according to the terms of the trust.

A lawyer can help you to do this. It is quite common. This is not a "do it yourself" project, or one for those non-lawyer trust mills.

You will need to name a trustee–this can be someone you trust whom you expect to outlive you, or the trust department of a bank. A successor trustee should also be named, just in case something unexpected happens to the original trustee. The trustee’s job is to make sure your instructions are followed to the letter.

Is life insurance a good investment for a married couple with no children or mortgage?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

My wife and I are considering purchasing life insurance but we aren’t sure if it is the best investment for the money involved. Advice would be helpful. We do plan on having a family in the next few years and our ages are 30 y/o and 29 y/o.

Life insurance is NOT an investment tool, any more than a pair of Prada heels is a good nail hitting tool.

It IS a financial tool, to prepare for certain contingencies IF YOU DIE.

So, set the FINANCIAL GOAL, and then find out what tool fits it best, at the least cost to you. Don’t ruin a pair of Pradas over this.

What happens to a life insurance payout after a medical assistance patient dies?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Say my parent has a life insurance policy, but depletes their assets and becomes eligible for medical assistance to pay for nursing home or medical costs. What happens to the payout to the beneficiary after that person’s death? Is it even worth keeping up such a policy in that case? Thanks.

Nothing happens to the payout to the beneficiary. When the beneficiary gets the money, it’s their’s.

If the beneficiary is the estate of the deceased, it can be used to reimburse the medical assistance costs.
